Bison Fire: Smith Valley Residents Requested to Evacuate

Posted: Updated:

Lyon County is requesting evacuation of the northwest portion of Smith Valley, north of Farias  Wheel Airport and west of Upper Colony Road.

A temporary shelter is being opened at the Smith Valley Baptist Church at 888 Hudson Way.

Sheriff's Deputies are currently going door-to-door asking residence to leave Pipeline Canyon.

The lightning-sparked Bison Fire is now 25,733 acres large and is 40% contained. Full containment is expected on July 14th.

20 structures remain threatened by the fire and have been voluntarily evacuated, and officials say that several commercial structures have been destroyed as the fire burned into the Slater Mine area. The extent of that damage is not yet known.

No injuries have been reported.

The following road closures for non-residents are in place for:

  • Pine Nut Road at the intersection of Out-R-Way
  • East Valley at Grandview
  • Sunrise Pass at Coyote Rocks
  • Brunswick Canyon
  • Mexican Dam
  • Sunrise Pass at Artesia Road

The Bureau of Land Management says a number of private ATVs, motorcycles and other vehicles have been seen very close to the fire area.  They ask that, for your safety and the safety of the firefighters, the public stay away from the fire area.

Lightning sparked the blaze on the Fourth of July.

The Bison Fire is producing a great deal of smoke and ash in the area of Mason Valley, Yerington and Smith Valley. This is due to the sustained winds and will continue until the winds die down.

People with respiratory problems are urged to stay indoors until the smoke and ash clear. If you are experiencing respiratory distress you are urged to seek medical help. If you know of someone that has respiratory problems you are urged to check on them until the smoke and ash clear.
