Lightning-Sparked Bison Fire 20% Contained

The lightning-sparked Bison Fire burning east of Gardnerville in Douglas County is now 20% contained.

The 2,000 acre fire started just before 3:30pm Thursday off Pine Nut Road in the Buffalo Canyon area.  

About 20 homes remain threatened as well as several penned livestock. No structures have been damaged.

Firefighters are actively engaged in structure protection and perimeter handline construction designed to keep the fire contained to the Pinenut Creek area. The Pinenut 2 road that leads into the residential areas has been closed except to residential and emergency traffic.

No injuries have been reported.

Sierra Front says the fire has crossed over the Pine Nut Range and is backing down the east slope. Hand crews are being moved off the fire at this time.

About 350 firefighters are currently working on the fire and is burning in a mix of pinion and juniper trees with extreme fire conditions.
