Both directions of travel have opened back up on Interstate 80 just West of the Nevada state line after a mudslide closed both directions Tuesday afternoon.

CalTrans Released this statement Tuesday afternoon:

A major mudslide triggered by severe thunderstorms late this afternoon closed Interstate 80 about 1.5 miles west of the California-Nevada border, according to the Department of Transportation.

Caltrans crews are en route to the football field-sized mudslide covering both the westbound and eastbound lanes with 3 to 8 inches of mud and debris. Eastbound traffic is being directed off the interstate at Hirschdale Road in Truckee. Westbound traffic is being turned around at the state line.

Motorists should use alternate routes. Eastbound big rigs are being routed on Highway 89 through Loyalton to Highway 395 in Nevada. Westbound big rigs are being routed to Highway 395 through Loyalton to Highway 89 to Truckee.

There is no estimated time for the opening of the interstate. Highway message boards in California and Nevada will provide the latest information. Caltrans will provide updates on Twitter @D3PIO and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict 3.
