Local Woman Completes Nevada Discovery Trail

Posted: Updated:

Samantha Szesciorka took part in the first-ever Nevada Discovery Ride, from the Utah border to Reno.

She is the first person to ride the Nevada Discovery Trail on the back of her wild mustang, Sage. Her dog, Bella, also accompanied her on the ride.

We previewed her journey several weeks ago and brought you an update from the trail. On Saturday afternoon, her 450-mile ride came to an end as the trio came down Toll Road in Reno. They were greeted by a group of supporters.

"We had an amazing adventure," Szesciorka said. "It feels really good to be done and to have such amazing support. It was an incredible month."

Sam, Sage and Bella set out nearly a month ago from the Utah border. They traveled through central Nevada, crossing eight counties and 14 mountain ranges.

"Just being out in the wilderness and nature, and feeling like I was so far from civilization, and being able to see wild animals up close, it was a great bonding experience for me and my horse," Szesciorka said.

After 450 miles, and enduring obstacles like severe heat, thunderstorms and some rough terrain, you can bet Samantha is glad to be home.

"We really had to force ourselves to keep going, to get up," she said. "There were a lot of challenges, but everyday, there were challenges and accomplishments I feel like."

While it can be classified as a personal adventure, Sam also wanted to raise awareness for wild mustang adoptions. She credits Sage for the safe and fun ride that she will never forget.

"I have him to thank," she said. "I have a fantastic horse. The whole point of the ride was to show that mustangs can be great adopted horses. I just took mine and rode it all the way across Nevada, and he was fantastic. He took care of me."

I asked Samantha what she's going to do now that she's back. She said the first thing was to take a shower and then grab some real food, specifically, pizza.
