New Neighborhood Watch Program to Start in Fernley

Posted: Updated:

Fernley officials say folks in the area are still shaken after what occurred last month, but they also want to be pro-active.

Four people were shot death in two different locations within Fernley. A fifth body was found near Mustang.

That's why officials and authorites are starting a new neighborhood watch program.

"I think this is a very positive development. If we can get neighborhood watch up and running in the different areas of Fernley, people will get to know their neighbors better, they'll learn more about their community. They'll get involved in other ways as well, and that's always a good thing," says Fernley City Manager Christopher Good.

The City of Fernley and Lyon County Sheriff's Office are calling on volunteers to help reduce crime in the area.

They say residents want Fernley to be known as a safe place to live.

And some of those residents we spoke with fully support the idea of a new watch progam.

"Bringing it to the attention of the people might bring more people who want to get involved. It would be a wonderful thing."

If you want to get involved in the neighborhood watch program, the City of Fernley and Lyon County Sheriff's Office will hold a community meeting next Wednesday, June 26th from 6pm to 7:30pm inside Fernley City Hall at 595 Silver Lace Boulevard.
