Northern Nevada Says Final Goodbye to Barbara Vucanovich

Posted: Updated:

People from across Northern Nevada paid their final respects on Friday to former congresswoman Barbara Vucanovich.

She passed away Monday at the age of 91.

Family members, friends and politicians poured into St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Reno. All of them praised the woman to whom they came to pay their final respects.

"She was just a terrific lady," says Roger Trounday, a longtime friend. "She took her job her very seriously, she was sincerely interested in the state of Nevada, but her family always came first."

After the funeral service at the church, a reception was held at John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks, where people talked about their favorite memories of Barbara.

"She had her philosophy and she was a conservative Republican, but she would cross the isle to move the agenda and find compromise," says Guy Rocha.

Barbara's daughter, Patty, was there as well. She says her mom passing away has been tough on everyone.

"But it was very, very nice to see all the outpouring of love for her, she touched a lot of lives over the years," says Patty.

We asked Patty if she would share something about her mom that most people didn't know.

"She was a hands-on mother," she says. "If you had multiplication tables you had to learn, she was there with the flashcards flipping them."

That's just one of the many stories that could be told about the woman who touched so many lives, and cared so much for the state of Nevada.
