The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident involving more than two dozen vehicles.

A dust storm caused the pileup Monday afternoon on Highway 80 in Winnemucca near milemarker 175.

Troopers say 8-9 vehicles crashed on the eastbound side of the roadway, while 17-18 vehicles crashed on the westbound side.

Both east and west lanes of I-80 were closed through the night and into Tuesday morning while the Nevada Highway Patrol and emergency crews removed vehicles and conducted investigations. Both directions are now back open to traffic.

While details of the accident remain under investigation, troopers say one man did die in the pileup. 51-year-old Ravi Dyer of Chicago was driving a semi-truck west and due to the poor visibility, Dyer's truck rear-ended another truck. Two other commerical vehicles then hit Dyer's truck from behind. The unidentified passenger inside Dyer's truck was also seriously injured and flown to a Reno hospital.

At this time, troopers believe 33 people were admitted to the Humboldt General Hospital for non life-threatening injuries. Three people were flown to a Reno hospital for serious injuries.
