Places 2 Check Out: Hussong's Reno

Posted: Updated:

If you've never been to the bar in Mexico, then be sure to check out the pictures on the walls at the restaurant in Reno. Many of them show the original world famous Hussong's taken from people who have gone there and sent back their party shots. "It's the oldest bar in Mexico. It's liquor license number 2 and liquor license number 1 has since gone out of business. So it's been open in Ensenada since 1892," says Hussong's partner, Scott Frost.

And in 1941, two bartenders, trying to impress a young lady, did something that put Hussong's on the mixology map forever. "Donald and Carlos Orozco created the first margarita for who was then the daughter of the German ambassador to Mexico and her name was Margarite and thus the margarita was born.

And there's some pretty good looking Baja California, Mexican cuisine being offered to go with that margarita. Like the chicken flautas, mahi mahi tacos and the rib eye tacos.

Scott, who's from Reno, fell in love with the story behind Hussong's. He first brought a sister restaurant to Las Vegas. But wanted one in his hometown of Reno. And he says inside the Silver Legacy is the perfect place to be. "The Silver Legacy is the heart of downtown. Not too far from campus. We really wanted to bring something new and exciting to the crown jewel of downtown and downtown is really starting to be revitalized."
