Posted: Updated:

Two men have been hospitalized after a wrong-way crash near Derby Dam early this morning.

Police say that at 5:44 a.m. they were called to a head-on collision on I-80 near mile marker 35, just one mile west of the Derby Dam interchange.

Police reports on the crash say that a blue 2008 Honda Civic, driven by 22-year-old Yves Nuyts of Sparks was traveling the wrong direction on the freeway, driving east in the westbound lane, when it crashed head-on with a black 2011 Chevrolet Cruze driven by 18-year-old Steven J. Gibson of Reno.

When officials arrived both men where taken from their cars by fire and medical workers. Nuyts was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno by Care Flight, Gibson was taken by ambulance. Nutys is reported to have life-threatining injuries, while Gibson's injuries are moderate, but not critical.

Police say they believe Nuyts was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Both lanes of Westbound I-80 were briefly closed for the investigation, but have since been re-opened.
