Dream Job Becomes a Reality for Local Photographer

Posted: Updated:

A McLaren, a Mercedes SLS and a 1980 L-39 military training jet. Take those three and give him a camera and Gil Folk is in seventh heaven. After all, he's just turned 21.

"I've always loved the way cars look, I've always been into the high-end automobiles and I've found a niche in photographing them," he says with a smile.

Gil has been taking pictures since grade school and has focused in on high-end automobile photography in the last few years. He turned pro with the photography in 2010. And he's found success.

"This guy has a great eye," says Gary Dyer, a former commercial airline pilot and the owner of the Mercedes SLS Gil shot on Tuesday morning. He also owns the training jet.

"I just thought it would be a great toy to own and bought it," Dyer says. "I wanted some pictures of it and so why not shoot them together? Sure he's young, but he's talented."

"Its all about the light," Gil says as he snaps off shots from atop a ladder and from under the jet's wing. "You have to have the right light but for each shot. You can't have any of the panels reflecting light. It takes practice but I've been practicing for years."

He's been selling high end photographs and articles to national car magazines for years and after landing a cover photograph for Octane Magazine they've hired him on as a roaming photographer in the United States. He starts in a couple of weeks. And keep in mind, he's just 21, not even through college yet.

"You have to follow your passion," says Mike Grant, who owns the McLaren in this same shoot. "I followed mine and this is just one of six cars I own, which means I've been successful. It's because I followed my passion. And that's what he's doing."

Not bad to land a dream job and a group of successful and supportive friends at such a young age.
