Money Panels Close Major K-12 Budgets

Posted: Updated:

Legislative money panels have approved Gov. Brian Sandoval's budget proposal for K-12 education, establishing $2.8 billion in general fund support for the upcoming two years.
The actions Friday by the Senate Finance and Assembly Ways and Means committees largely follow what the first-term Republican recommended in his $6.5 billion spending proposal.
The plan sets per-pupil support at around $5,600, an increase of about $200 over existing funding levels.
All-day kindergarten will be expanded to 75 more schools, for a total of 201, with an addition of $80 million over the biennium.
Additionally, the budget earmarks about $50 million for English language learner programs.
Committee approval on the major budget items will be drafted into a bill. Lawmakers are pressing toward a June 3 adjournment.  (AP)
