Local Kayakers Advance to National Competitions

Posted: Updated:

University of Nevada geology student Jason Craig is on his way to tour the country competing in his kayak.

It was a long road to get him here -  he crashed into a rock kayaking off a 30 foot waterfall two years ago and broke his spine and pelvis. He had 20 pieces of metal installed.

Jason just won first place in freestyle kayaking at the Reno River Festival. He's now part of the USA Freestyle Team and will compete in the world championships this fall.

"When you love something so much it's what you care about and what you do and it's who you are, you don't give something up like that."

Another local champion is 12-year-old Sage Donnelly of Carson City. She is diabetic, has celiac and thyroid diseases but says she never lets any challenges hold her back. "Don't let it stop you. Go and do whatever sport you want to do."

She also just won first in three events at the Reno River Festival and is also on her way to compete nationwide.
