Angelina Jolie Says She Had Double Mastectomy

Posted: Updated:

Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie had already undergone a preventative double mastectomy and was awaiting reconstructive surgery when she attended a G-8 Meeting in London last month.

She says she made the agonizing decision to have both breasts removed after learning she had an 87% risk of getting cancer.

In the editorial pages of Tuesday's New York Times she wrote "... the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But is one I am very happy that I made."

Jolie discovered she had the breast cancer gene mutation called BRACA 1 after losing her mother to ovarian cancer at age 56 in 2007. She opened up to "60 Minutes" about her mom in 2011.

"She was the most generous... loving... (chokes up) she's better than me (laugh)."

Jolie says she didn't want her six children to lose their mother to cancer.

Jolie went through the three month procedure here at the Pink Lotus Breast Center in Beverly Hills. Doctors say her chances of getting breast cancer are now less than 5 percent.

Jolie says her fiance, Brad Pitt was by her side "for every minute of the surgeries," and that they managed to find moments to laugh.

Pitt released a statement to a London newspaper saying "All I want is for her to have a long and healhy life, with myself and our children" He called Jolie's decision "absolutely heroic."
