Soroptimist International Celebrates Unsung Heroes

Posted: Updated:

She embodies accomplishment. Lauren Sweet has served in student body government at McQueen High School, sung in the choir, been in leadership classes and maintained a 4.0 GPA all four years. And she's done it in spite of overcoming scoliosis by going through a major operation to fuse her spine when she was in 8th grade.

"In 2008 they operated and so my backbone is titanium," she says. "But I'm fine now. I can jump and dance and bend."

Not only did it give her new perspective on life, it helped her see other people from a difference perspective. "I really do have a different perspective on people." she says. "I see that you can't judge people right away. You have to get to know them. And we can all use some help sometimes."

And so she does a lot of community outreach for others. "Lauren is, well, obviously she's 'sweet'," says McQueen High Counselor Sandra Casey. She's been a counselor for 16 years and Lauren stuck out as someone special.

"You meet and know hundreds of kids in this job and there are just four or five that stick with you and she was one of those. She's smart, there's not a lot of drama with Lauren. She seems more mature than most high schoolers. Maybe it's been all she's been through. But she is always positive and never once has said, 'why me?' She just looks for ways to help others."

The Soroptimists International of Reno also noticed. They have named Lauren as one of their Unsung Heroes. They will be celebrated with scholarship winners at the annual Soroptimist Reno Awards Luncheon set for Thursday, May 23rd at noon at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.
