Bill Lets Domestic Violence Victims Out of Leases

Posted: Updated:

State lawmakers are discussing a bill that would create an avenue for victims of domestic violence in Nevada to get out of their rental leases.

Members of the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee heard Democratic Assemblywoman Lucy Flores of Las Vegas present AB284 Friday.

Currently, Nevada has no provision granting domestic violence victims special accommodations for lease contracts.

Flores says victims are often trapped in dangerous situations because of the financial implications of breaking a lease. She adds breaking a lease also makes finding new housing more difficult.

The proposal allows victims to break their leases without penalty if the victim provides their landlord a copy of a police report, temporary protection order or an affidavit from a qualified third party affirming the tenant's account.

The committee took no action.  (AP)
