WCSD Racks Up "Bike to School Week"

Posted: Updated:

From the Washoe County School District:

The Washoe County Health District is launching the Keep It Clean and Rack ‘Em Up campaign for National Bike Month this month. During National Bike to School Week, Washoe County students are encouraged to gear up and celebrate bicycling safely to and from school. This is the Second Annual National Bike to School celebration.

"Best Decorated" and "Fullest Bike Racks" awards will net schools $1,500 in prizes for first, second, and third places in each contest. Judging will be based on photos sent to the Washoe County Health District Air Quality Management Division (AQMD). Visit www.ourcleanair.com for more information.

Students will gather at local parks and ride to school together during Bike to School Week. They will also participate in after-school events where they will ride bikes from their schools to local points of interest. These events are a collaborative effort of the Washoe County School Districts Safe Routes to Schools Program and the AQMD. The contest is part of a community-wide, monthlong celebration of bicycling activities sponsored by the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance (TMBA). For more information about TMBA, visit www.bikenevada.org.

"Gathering students in one place for these events provides a way to give them bike safety tips they can use all summer long," said WCSD Police Officer MJ Cloud, coordinator of Safe Routes To School. "Adolescents who bike are less likely to be overweight as adults; and pedaling rather than driving cuts down on ozone pollution."
