National Bike Month: Good for Your Wallet - and Health!

Posted: Updated:

More and more Americans are pedaling to work each morning. The Census Bureau found commuting by bike increased by 47% between 2000 and 2010.

And many of the country's biggest cities saw bike commuting double!

If you live a bikable distance from work and there is a safe route, consider foregoing the gas bills, parking fees, traffic and car maintenance costs.

Grab a helmet and get pedaling!

Start with one or two days a week and see how your body and your wallet react.

The League of American Bicyclists estimates bikers in the U.S. saved $4.6 billion last year in commuting costs.

The group says the annual cost of operating a bike is just $308, compared to $8,000 for a car.

In large cities, commuters can save up to $200 a month in parking alone by leaving their four wheels at home.

You'll get a cardiovascular workout and just might arrive at work and back home in the evening with a little less stress.

If you need some incentive for your company to encourage green commuting, the League offers this statistic: for the same cost of creating four parking spaces for cars, they could create parking for 75 bikes!
