Jaycee Lee Dugard Honored by Missing Children's Center

Posted: Updated:

Just this week -- we've seen incredible stories of survival with three young women from Cleveland, Ohio discovered after ten years missing.

Tuesday night at an event for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Jaycee Lee Dugard and her mother addressed the story that's been making headlines nationwide.

"I'm a little emotional as I stand here in front of you today, another miracle happened yesterday and three girls are alive," says Dugard's mother Terry Probyn.

Jaycee Lee's mom spoke after her daughter received a hope award from the center.

Dugard said the case in Ohio reaffirms that people should never give up hope - and it's organizations like this that are crucial in helping victims heal.

"I feel like I have come full circle, and we are all finally together, celebrating that you at nic-mic keep alive everyday. I am so thankful for the team that have supported me throughout these last few years, I am so grateful for all of you."

Dugard was found alive almost four years ago.

She had been held captive for 18 years. She was later confined to a hidden backyard compound where she eventually lived with two daughters fathered by Phillip Garrido.

Dugard has since created the JAYC Foundation to provide support to families who have experienced abduction or other traumatic events.

Phillip Garrido, who was on parole for a 1976 rape when Dugard was abducted at age 11, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and 13 sexual assault charges, including six counts of rape and seven counts of committing lewd acts captured on video.

His plea was part of a deal with prosecutors that saw his wife and accomplice, Nancy Garrido, sentenced to 36 years to life after pleading guilty to kidnapping and rape.
