Yosemite Park Rangers Recover Body of Missing Hiker

Posted: Updated:

Authorities say a missing hiker has been found dead at the bottom of a cliff in Yosemite National Park.

Official say rangers found the body of 73-year-old Kenneth Stensby of Edina, Minn., near the base of Vernal Fall, where he had apparently fallen after stopping to take a photo of a waterfall.  Search crews had found his backpack on Sunday at the top of the waterfall.  His camera was not in the pack.

His body was removed from the area early Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say Stensby had spent several days traveling alone in the park. Each morning he left a note with the concierge at the Ahwahnee hotel describing where he was going and when he would return.

On Sunday the veteran hiker was expected to return from the steep hike up the slippery Mist Trail by noon. When he wasn't back by 5 p.m. hotel officials alerted authorities. (AP)
