Senior Services to See More Cuts from Sequester

Posted: Updated:

As the sequestration cuts ripple through the economy agencies are planning for more impacts. Senior Services in Washoe County are included in that. And the Meals on Wheels program will see some changes.

"There's no way to avoid more cuts," says Grady Tarbutton with the Senior Services for the County. "Every state has been given its cuts. Nevada was given 13.71%. That means that we now serve 900 meals in a day. We'll have to cut that by 52 meals. How? We don't know yet. But these cuts will be significant and we're pretty sure they will be permanent."

Many of the seniors who depend on the Meals on Wheels program are homebound. They can no longer cook and they now receive one hot meal a week and five frozen meals. But the program delivers much more than nutrition.

"Often the Meals on Wheels drivers are these folks only contact with the community in an entire week," says Dawn Costa one of many case workers for the county.

No cuts will be made until October and the county plans to spend the next 9 months gathering input from the community on suggestions for dealing with the cuts.
