Mackay Stadium Could Soon Undergo Makeover

Posted: Updated:

The Nevada Wolf Pack has played hundreds of games at Mackay Stadium since it opened in 1966 holding 30,000 fans.

Now, the athletic department is hoping to add some new amenities and hospitality.

"We've got to get this project done. It's an important project for our fans. We think it will be an important project for our department and our university for many, many years," says Athletic Director Doug Knuth.

The senior renovation project includes the addition of new suites and a state-of-the-art club level -- built onto the sky boxes and connecting to the parking garage.

"That will literally be a game changer for us. Be able to have a stadium club, full-service kitchen. It's just a place for our fans to go," says Nevada Senior Associate Athletic Director Rory Hickok.

Knuth adds, "You have the option to sit up in the suite or sit in a metal bleacher. What we're hearing from our fans is that there's got to be other alternatives."

The plan will also replace some of the bleachers with 2,900 chairs.

Knuth says it will put Mackay Stadium on the same level as other stadiums in the conference.

"The Mountain West Conference has got some great stadiums. They've got some great fan bases and we want to be known as one of those great stadiums and great fan bases."

The project is expected to cost between $6-$8 million - and would come from private funding.

Those involved believes it's an investment into the future of the university's athletic program.

"There will be some additional revenue for the department, but from day one, this has been about the fans and creating a great fan atmosphere."

"It's a big project but I think it's going to be entirely worth it," says Hickok.

The project is still in the beginning phase and the goal is to begin construction at the end of this football season.

The plan will likely mean fewer seats overall and a change in ticket prices.

We'll be sure to update you as that information is released.
