Grand Sierra Resort Hosts Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival

Posted: Updated:

Cinco de Mayo signifies an important day in history when the Mexican Army came away victorious in a battle with France in 1862.

The holiday gives folks everywhere a chance to celebrate.

Those celebrations went on here in northern Nevada as well, where people gathered for the 14th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival.

"We're seeing dancers, and we're seeing dancing horses and really quite a bit of everything,' says Adam Lifter. "Lots of traditional ethnic food."

More than 100 vendors were set up in the Grand Sierra Resort parking lot, offering plenty of entertainment. One of the attractions was dancing horses, which drew some big crowds.

"Hispanic people and people from other countries that have fun, and you can have some food and know about our culture," says Astiid Perez.

Parents say it's important for their kids to learn more about the Hispanic culture and see it first hand.

"I want to make sure that my daughter is exposed to the culture here, and this just gives her an opportunity to be around her culture as well," says Jackie De La Torre.

Americans have clearly embraced the Mexican holiday, which folks at the festival say they're happy to see.

"We're really proud of it," says Perez. "Because we have the chance to show you guys that we are good people who care, and work hard."

More than 50,000 people attended last year's event. Even with the scattered showers all weekend, organizers suspect they topped that number this year.
