Nevada Bill Would Create Death Penalty Cost Study

Posted: Updated:

Nevada lawmakers want to take a closer look at the cost of keeping the death penalty in the state's criminal punishment arsenal.
AB444 heard by the Assembly Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections seeks an interim study on the costs of the death penalty.
A report would be submitted to the 2015 Legislature.
A similar measure approved in 2011 was vetoed by Gov. Brian Sandoval.
Democratic Assemblyman James Ohrenschall of Las Vegas says the new bill adds specific language to address Sandoval's concerns from two years ago.
For one thing, the audit would include any financial savings from the death penalty to ensure a fair study.
The committee took no action on the bill late Thursday.   (AP)
