BBQ Blamed for Apartment Fire in Southeast Reno

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters blame a BBQ for a fire that destroyed three units at Rosewood Park Apartments in southeast Reno.

The fire broke out around 3:30pm Thursday at the complex located on Sierra Madre Drive, near South McCarran Blvd.

"It's a warmer day and I know everybody wants to get out and barbecue right now, but the winds are picking up in the afternoons, just like they do every afternoon around here. And underneath an awning is not the place to do it," says Batt. Chief Scott Baker.

Crews tell us two buildings were evacuated as a precaution as firefighters knocked down the blaze.

There were dozens of onlookers who say they saw black smoke - and then the flames just continued to grow. "I've never seen anything like this before. And we lived at these apartments before we moved in over here," says Matthew Weeks.

Fire investigators say it appears no one was hurt - and people are being let back into the complex.
