New Program Helps Struggling Nevada Homeowners

Posted: Updated:

Even though the latest reports show the housing market on the rebound, there's no question, many people are still struggling to stay in their homes.

For this week's Face the State, I took a closer look at a program that helps, called Home Again.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said the Home Again program does two things. It helps homeowners maneuver through the various programs that are out there and point them to one that helps. And oh yeah, it's free!

"Quite often, I would hear homeowners who were distressed. There were so many programs out there, they didn't know where to start or where to go. Quite often, when they went down a path, unfortunately, there were times, somebody was a scammer or somebody trying to defraud them with a fraudulent program."

The program helps those seeking loan modifications, borrowers who are current, but underwater, those who lost homes to foreclosure, and even those working toward home ownership.

Masto said they started Home Again in January. Since then, they have received more than 8,000 calls for help.

Masto said when a homeowner first makes the call, they assess their needs and partner them up with a counselor.

She said from there, they take a look at whether the homeowner is eligible for one of the many programs out there.

"Also, if they were victims of fraud or victims of a robosigning scam or need legal advice, they would then be diverted from the housing counselor to a legal aid program or our office if there was a fraud. So, because we have this consortium and we're all working together, it really is the benefit of a homeowner in this state."
