16th Annual Officers Memorial Held in Carson City

Posted: Updated:

As part of National Police Memorial Month, members of various law enforcement agencies came together on Thursday to honor fallen officers.

This was the 16th year of the officers memorial ceremony which pays tribute to the 123 Nevada peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

The spot, located on capitol grounds in Carson City, was dedicated to recognize fallen officers in 1998.

One Elko County sheriff's deputy said they have to put their lives on the line on a daily basis. "Anytime we make a traffic stop we're taking that chance because we don't know who we're dealing with. There was a trooper that was killed here several years ago on I-80 that went up to a traffic stop and got shot in the face," says Sgt. Dave Winstead.

The names of Carson City Police Officer Vernon Carvin, Lieutenant Glenn Barnes of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office and Deputy Danny Van Lawrence of the Elko County Sheriff's Office were enshrined on the memorial Thursday.

A tree and memorial plaque was also dedicated to former Senator William 'Bill' Raggio. Nevada's longest serving senator and former Washoe County District Attorney was always a strong supporter of Nevada law enforcement.

The Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run is April 25th. One leg of the run is completed in the memory of each officer listed on the memorial.
