Sheriff: Intruder Intent on Attacking Northern California Girl

Posted: Updated:

Authorities in Northern California say the slaying of an 8-year-old girl at her home does not appear to have stemmed from a botched robbery or other crime gone wrong.

According to the Modesto Bee, Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz said it appears the unknown intruder intended to attack Leila Fowler.

Kuntz spoke at a hastily called news conference on Monday night.

Authorities say Leila was found fatally stabbed on Saturday at her home in the rural community of Valley Springs by her 12-year-old brother, who told investigators he encountered the male suspect.

Investigators have released a vague description of the man but are still trying to determine his identity.

Authorities have interviewed and photographed a number of sex offenders who live in the area. They are testing DNA evidence which the Justice Department and attorney general's office have offered to expedite. "We are doing everything possible to apprehend the person responsible for the murder of this eight-year-old girl," says Kuntz.

Leila's death sparked a massive manhunt that put the community on lockdown.

In an online post, Leila's mother said her family is devastated by the loss.
