Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick Not Running for Re-Election

Posted: Updated:

Longtime Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick says he will not run for re-election in 2014, and will retire once his term ends in 2015.

During a taping today for the television show "Nevada Newsmakers" in Carson City, Gammick announced he would not be running again.

"One of my passions, training dogs and chukar hunting."

"Gonna be a trip to Disneyland. Somewhere in there, and I'm going to go fishing. It's gonna be nice to wake up in the morning and say 'this is what I'm going to do today.'"

After nearly two decades as DA, he says campaigns have gotten too ugly and sometimes personal. "That was one of the factors in me retiring and going about other business. My wife told me we're not doing this again. When you start dragging people's families into it, that crosses the line. That crosses any line as far as I'm concerned."

Gammick says he's proud of many accomplishments over the years - like the creation of a sexual assault center for women and children, the construction of the Mills B. Lane Justice Center and preventative programs like drug court - aiming to keep young people out of prison. "If you can get their attention and get them straightened out, that's one more you don't have to deal with."

"People think I'm nothing but an absolute hardass and I want to throw everybody in prison. That isn't the case. I want the bad guys. I want them bad. I want them in prison forever."

Gammick endorsed Washoe County Deputy District Attorney Chris Hicks for the job. Hicks is an 11-year veteran of the office. Hicks announced he will run for the office in a separate segment of the show.

"My family has been here for going on five generations now and it means a lot to me to do my part and I feel like what I do best is prosecute. So, it's a perfect fit for me to help the community succeed in whatever way I can."

Hicks says he's not a politician and has never ran for office before, but he says he's ready for whatever the campaign ahead brings.

Gammick has been Washoe County District Attorney since 1995, and was a Reno police officer and served in the Army in Vietnam beforehand.
