Investigators: Child Playing With Matches Sparks Small Fire

Posted: Updated:

Investigators say a child playing with matches is to blame for a small brushfire that broke out east of Pyramid Highway Thursday afternoon.

Sparks firefighters say lights winds helped spread the fire to about 1,000 square feet in size. It burned in a mixture of grass and sagebrush, and burned towards a drainage ditch.

No structures were threatened.

Fire crews were able to get the blaze under control within 10 minutes.

Ten Sparks Fire personnel responded including a Battalion Chief, one structure engine, one brush truck, a safety officer and two fire investigators.

The Sparks Fire Department is reminding everyone to be cautious – drought conditions have caused vegetation to be extremely dry, and the potential for fires to start and rapidly spread are high.
