Places 2 Check Out: Z Bar

Posted: Updated:

What was once the Zypher, is now the Z Bar. It has a whole new look from its time as a pretty grungy hangout. Nowadays, it's hard to decide which is more colorful.

The fruits and vegetables on the bar - or the man behind it. Boyd is the co-owner and bartender at Z Bar. He considers it a restaurant without food. "For me, I'm a chef. Everything starts with food. That's my baby. I'm a foodie at heart and if you can drink it you can eat it. Every night, sometimes we might be using cucumbers and raspberries or ginger or go as far as salmon and dill or baby octopus smoked cocktails. Whatever I can get my hands on."

Take for example the devil's hand. Boyd pours champagne on blackberries, vodka, lime juice and simple syrup. "All my syrups are made here. We make them fresh daily. This is simple syrup. I use non-refined sugar. No refined sugars means no hangover. That's the most beautiful thing you're ever going to hear in a bar, right?"

Z Bar now has a pool table upstairs. A fire pit outside. And daily happy hour from 4-6 where any cocktail is just $4. Including Boyd's famous Bloody Mary. "My Blood Marys are a pretty big deal around here. Pretty big deal!"

He starts by making his own mix. "I fold in beef stock and veal stock and white wine and a little bit of Guinness and pepperoncini juice, jalapenos and olive juice and pickle brine and the list goes on and on and on and on and on."

He then stuffs it from his bar top garden. It's like an appetizer you can nosh on while drinking. He even makes the rim salt. "Ya, everything we do here. If it's behind this bar we made it. Unless God made it, we made it. Mother nature and me. That's how we work."

Needless to say Z Bar is kicking it up a notch for the bar scene in Midtown.
