Peppermill Casino Scores Major Green Points

Posted: Updated:

A local casino is scoring big points across the globe. The Peppermill has hit the jackpot with geothermal energy.

If you search for eco-friendly hotels on TripAdvisor.com, the Peppermill now pops up with a green level status.

The casino says it is now grabbing the attention of the environmentally conscious on a global level.

"They think we're in the shadow of (Las) Vegas; we're so different than Vegas," says PR Manager Julia Jeffers.

Forbes Magazine also gave the Peppermill a huge shout out for being the only resort in the U.S. to use geothermal energy from an on-sight well 4,400 feet down. "That machine uses volcanic energy to heat the spa, the pool, the showers, the sink…"

The Peppermill even donates shampoos and soaps left behind by guests – they sterilize them and give 1,000 pounds a month to families who need them.

"I don't see how you could, but if you have any leftovers after eating here, they'll use the scrap for compost. Waste Management will actually use it for landscaping and gardening."

Other efforts include replacing all grass with turf, saving about six million gallons of water a year, and changing their parking lot lights to LEDs, saving about $120,000.

"We're not this pass through town. There's a wonderful resort experience here and we are eco-friendly."
