Washoe County Air Quality Gets "C" in 2013 Report

Posted: Updated:

The American Lung Association says Washoe County is average when it comes to air pollution in the country.

That's the finding according to the annual ‘State of the Air' report released on Wednesday.

The Health District says Washoe County's "C" grade was due to seven days in that time frame when our air quality was in the unhealthy range for sensitive groups, and while that grade is a little harsh, officials say it's important for people to take precaution from time-to-time. "There are days when our air quality can impact the health of children, the elderly people with asthma or lung disease, even healthy people if they're out vigorously exercising," says director Kevin Dick.

Clark County earned an "F." The group says valley smog levels now rank as the 16th worst in the nation. Nevertheless, a Nevada American Lung Association representative says the air in Las Vegas is certainly cleaner than it was when the first report came out 14 years ago.

Among the other Nevada counties reviewed, Churchill got an "A" and Carson City, Lyon and White Pine Counties all got a "B."

California cities dominated the list of places with the dirtiest air. The six worst for ozone and the seven worst for year-round particulate pollution were all in the Golden State.
