Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Murder of Reno Woman

A local man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a woman last year.

35-year old Joe Scott was convicted of murdering 58-year old Tanjernia Whitfield.

The Washoe County District Attorney's Office says Scott was also sentenced to another 20-years for the use of a deadly weapon in the murder.

He will be eligible for parole in 18 years.

Back on September 2nd, Officers responded to Whitfield's home on Mill Street for a report of a stabbing. They found her at her doorstep with multiple stab wounds.

She was taken to the hospital where she stayed for treatment until her death about three weeks later.

Investigators found Scott was staying with Whitfield, and he was also seen leaving the home just before Whitfield was found with her stab wounds.

Court documents say the murder weapon, which was a multi-tool knife, was thrown into a trash can near the home by Scott. Before he was arrested, Scott also threw away the bloody clothing and shoes he was wearing during the murder.

He originally claimed his clothes had been stolen and that he had not been to Whitfield's house that day. He later admitted to the murder.

The District Attorney's Office says at his sentencing, Scott claimed Whitfield's murder was an accident. He told the judge he had been using methamphetamine for three weeks straight when he murdered Whitfield. He also said he stabbed her because he was experiencing drug-induced hallucinations and thought she was a demon.
