Family: We Sought Help for Accused Ricin Mailer

Posted: Updated:

The family of a man accused of mailing ricin-tainted letters to the president and a U.S. senator says they have tried for years to get him help for his mental illness.

Jack Curtis issued a statement on behalf of the family of his brother, Paul Kevin Curtis, on Thursday evening. It says Kevin Curtis' mental problems, which include bipolar disorder, cause the man to believe he does not need medical treatment.

The family says that Kevin Curtis refuses to take his medication, and that there is no legal way for them to force him to do so. They say they do not know details of the charges against Kevin Curtis.

The statement says that when Kevin Curtis does take his medication as prescribed, he is a loving and intelligent person.  (AP)
