Storey County, in partnership with Waste Management, is offering several Free Dump Days for county residents in an effort to assist with household trash cleanup and curb illegal dumping.  During the Lockwood Annual Spring Free Dump Event, May 2-4, 2013 at the Lockwood Regional Landfill, all county residents can dump at no charge. Virginia City residents are encouraged to dispose of trash at the Virginia City Transfer Station, located at the end of Washington Street, May 3-4, 2013. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for both locations.

"Our hope is that by having Free Dump Days for anyone from any part of Storey County, we will assist in providing relief from any financial burdens that may be keeping residents from cleaning up," Commissioner Marshal McBride, said. "As a life-long Virginia City resident, our family has always taken pride in our community and we encourage everyone to band together and clean up the town we love."

On May 2, Storey County and Waste Management are offering assistance for elderly and disabled residents, or those that require additional assistance with yard or household cleanup and removal. Residents must make arrangements in advance by calling the Storey County Community Services office at 775-846-7500.

There is a 3-yard limit per home and addresses must be provided at the transfer station. Free Dump Days are free up to 3-yards with standard and small pick-up trucks. Standard fees apply to additional loads.

Materials accepted at no charge include: eligible household appliances (Freon-free refrigerators, hot water heaters, stoves, dishwashers and washer/dryers) and eligible bulky waste (sofas, chairs, mattresses and box springs).

Unacceptable items include: dirt, cathode ray tubes, concrete, large heavy metals, liquids, engines, toxic or hazardous materials and transmissions.

For questions and additional information, contact Storey County Community Services at 775-847-7500.
