Expelled Nevada Lawmaker Indicted on Firearm Count

Posted: Updated:

A former Nevada lawmaker has been indicted on a felony firearms charge stemming from an arrest in January in North Las Vegas that began a spiral leading to his expulsion from the Legislature.

Prosecutor Thom Gover said Thursday the possession of a firearm by a prohibited person charge against Steven Brooks alleges that he shouldn't have had a gun because he was an unlawful marijuana user.

A conviction could get Brooks up to four years in state prison.

Brooks' lawyer, Mitchell Posin, calls the charge a stretch and says Brooks will plead not guilty.

Brooks is jailed in California's San Bernardino County after pleading not guilty to charges of resisting an officer, felony evading and assault on a police animal in a March 28 chase and arrest on Interstate 15.  (AP)
