100 Years and Counting for Mark Yori

Posted: Updated:

You may think of Reno as a little city now but Mark Yori remembers when it was a really little city.

"It ran from Keystone to Lake Street and from 9th Street to the river and that was it. Everything else was out of town," Yori says with a laugh.

And that is where he made a name for himself. Yori developed and ran Lawton's Springs on the Truckee River starting in 1939. It was much more than a hot springs, he remembers.

"We had ten dancing girls, a strip tease act, stars dropping by, a 15-piece orchestra, a ballroom and room for 250 for dinner!" he says. "Folks would come out and swim and stay. We had a 100 room hotel there too. It was the place to be!"

Well, today was Mark Yori's 100th birthday. You may recognize his name around town. Yori Park, even Yori Avenue. He says the growth in Reno makes the city seem like night and day to him. But he never thought he'd live this long and says it's been interesting to watch the changes in progress. And he says he has plenty of memories to think back on...enough to last the rest of his life.
