Local Florists Fight to Stop Internet Confusion

If you are a local florist in Sparks, you'd think the name Sparks Florist would make you immediately identifiable as well...a florist in Sparks, right? But that's not the case on the Internet. Just ask Suzanne Shepherd of Sparks Florist.

"What we find is that people can go to the web, type in Sparks Florist or just florist and Sparks and all these other websites pop up as if they are us."

Shepherd says national websites are keying in on their name and location, and they are not necessarily from Nevada or reputable.

"This is completely deceptive," Shepherd says. This is people pretending they are us when they are just a room full of telephone operators at a call center!"

She says she's getting calls from people wondering why they didn't get their flowers when it turns out they ordered from a website in New York, or somewhere else back east.

She estimates the confusion is costing her 5-10% of her revenues - and her reputation.

"You always wonder how many other people didn't get good service and just didn't bother to call or complain, but never use us again..when they never used us in the first place!" she says.

So local florists have gotten State Senator Debbie Smith to introduce SB 404 which would require anyone advertising in Nevada to list an actual address. A similar bill has already passed in California and Google does enforce laws on the books. So Shepherd will be a part of ushering this bill through which she says will ensure that when you order flowers from Sparks Florist you're actually dealing with a florist in Sparks.
