Aces Comeback Falls Short in 15-11 Loss

Posted: Updated:

The Reno Aces attempted a late-inning comeback, but the squad fell 15-11 to the Sacramento River Cats on Saturday night at Aces Ballpark.

Reno scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh, due in part to a Tuffy Gosewisch homer, to bring the club within two, down 12-10. A solo homer by Didi Gregorius, on a Major League Rehabilitation Assignment with Reno, brought the club within one.  Gregorius went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the designated hitter.

A pair of walks and a single off reliever Evan Marshall loaded the bases for the River Cats in the top of the ninth. Runs were scored on the next two plays off an RBI single and a ground out, before a wild pitch allowed Grant Green to score from third.

Brad Snyder reached on a fielding error to begin the bottom of the frame, but the next three Aces batters were retired in order to end the game.

Chris Owings, ranked the No. 6 prospect in the D-backs organization by Baseball America, went 3-for-5 on the night with two runs scored.

Aces LHP Tyler Skaggs, who was charged with the loss, was roughed up in his 2013 home debut. He gave up nine earned runs on eight hits through 2.1 innings. Skaggs struck out three and walked three.

RHP Sonny Gray earned his first win of the season for the River Cats. He gave up four runs—three earned—on seven hits through 5.0 innings pitched. Gray struck out five and walked three batters.

The series continues Sunday afternoon at Aces Ballpark. RHP Nelson Figueroa (0-0, 6.75 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while the River Cats will counter with LHP Andrew Werner (0-2, 12.10 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PT. Sunday will be the first Renown Children's Hospital Family Funday, featuring the return of baseball bingo. Fans can play for the chance to win a baseball autographed by Aces Manager Brett Butler. Championship banners will be given away to 2,000 lucky fans at the gates.

Tickets are on sale Sunday's game, and all Aces home games, at RenoAces.com, by calling (775) 334-7000 or by visiting the Aces Ballpark Ticket Office.
