Aces Ballpark Preparing For Opening Day

Posted: Updated:

After starting the season on the road, the Reno Aces will be in town Friday night for the first home game of the 2013 season.

That means ballpark employees are working hard to get everything prepared.

The last few months, staff members have been selling tickets, replacing seats and repairing the field. Not much time to relax and enjoy the off-season.

"We have a couple weeks after the season wraps up," says Shannon Siders, Manager of Communications with the team. "We won the championship last year, so it was even later than it normally would be. But then, we're really back at it."

The culinary crew is also back at it. The executive chef at the ballpark has been training staff and tweaking the menu for three months now.

"Definitely hot dogs are always going to be the biggest seller here at the ballpark," says Justin Davis. "But, of course, we have several different healthy options with all of the wraps we're doing in the concession stands."

Just how much food is estimated to be consumed at the ballpark on Friday?

"It's absolutely up in the thousands of pounds of food," says Davis.

That number only grows when you include surrounding restaurants like Arroyo Mexican Grill.

"My staff is probably tripled for the front of the house," says Howard Aldrich, the general manager. "We're expecting a lot of big things. A lot of business. Very excited for the start of the ball season."

Business slows down when the Aces aren't in season. But now, this is when things really pick up. Aldrich says he not only has expectations for opening day, but for the whole season as well.

"The Aces win a championship last year. Got the all-star game this year. This is probably going to be the biggest year ever."

The Aces expect a large crowd Friday night. The first pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
