DA May Seek Death Penalty Against McCune Murder Suspects

Posted: Updated:

The District Attorney's Office says it may seek the death penalty against the four people accused of killing the chief insurance examiner for the state of Nevada.

Makayla Blackmore, Raul Garcia, Anthony Elliot, and Michael Evans made their initial court appearance before a judge in Carson City Wednesday - where a judge ordered them held without bail.

Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for two weeks from tomorrow.

Prosecutors say they beat 62-year-old William McCune to death and robbed his apartment.

McCune's duct-taped blanket-wrapped body was found Saturday in the Carson River.

Carson City Coroner Ruth Rhines says it could take several weeks for tests to show how McCune died. He was positively identified by the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office through dental and medical x-rays.

McCune was reported missing on Thursday after he did not show up for work and missed a work-related flight. Deputies responded to an apartment in the 700 block of Silver Oak Drive just after 8:30 a.m., and discovered signs of an obvious struggle.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says at least one of the suspects has had direct contact with McCune in the past. Detectives believe illegal drugs could be involved, and a possible motive behind the incident.

Evans is charged with murder, murder of an older person, battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm and burglary. Blackmore is charged with murder and burglary, Garcia is also charged with murder and burglary, and Elliott is charged with murder.
