WCSD Police Host K9 Training at Area High School

Posted: Updated:

The Washoe County School Police Department hosted training for dozens of different K9s and the handlers from across Nevada and Northern California Wednesday morning at North Valleys High School.

The K9s practiced looking for narcotics on a school bus as well how to go after someone in a bite suit.

"Training is continuous, you never stop with the training with them it's just like us with police officers. We continually train all the time," says Officer Rich Jennerjohn of Moapa Tribal Police.

K9 handlers look for dogs with a high toy and play drives, who are social and can be around people.

Most of the dogs, German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois, can smell narcotics from outside a vehicle.

Some Belgian Malinois are flown over from Holland so their handlers speak to them in Dutch.
