Olive Oil Makes a Splash in West Reno

Posted: Updated:

If you like olive oil, you can't help but love the Big Horn Oil Company in west Reno. They have 50 varieties of extra virgin olive oil.

You want blood orange, lemon or Persian lime? They've got it. And the right vinegars to pair with them.

Owner Mercedes Burkavage likens olive oil shopping to shopping for apples. She says they all have similarities but they have subtle differences too. "Some olives are mild, some are inherently strong and some are robust. And you need to taste them to see those differences," Burkavage says.

So she takes customers on tours of the varieties and has them taste them to see.

And when it gets to the balsamic vinegars, she has definite opinions and uses. You see oils and vinegars aren't just for salad anymore. The vinegars are good for marinades and fused and infused vinegars can be mixed with sparking waters for delicate refreshing spritzers.

Michele Hill of Reno stopped in with her son out of curiosity.

"We'd seen the tasting room sign and just wondered what it was all about," Hill says. "We had a little extra time today so we came in. And what a surprise. They are right the oils do taste different and she poured peach balsamic into fizzy water and it was refreshing and cleansing and great. I'm excited!"

And Burkavage says business has been strong for the six months they've been open. And they change the oils with the seasons to keep them all fresh. So when you think you've tasted them all, it will be time to start all over again.

The Big Horn Olive Oil Company is located in Mayberry Landing in west Reno. You can find them online at http://www.bighornoliveoil.com/
