'FROM' Raises Money for American Cancer Society

Posted: Updated:

It started as a fake prom with just a few friends and has now turned into a fundraiser.

"Some friends learned that I never went to prom in high school so we got together and had fun," says Bryan Sintay.

So much fun they are going on eight years of this "fake prom" or "FROM." It was at Sintay's business, Kona Gold Coffee Company in Reno.

But the group grew and started spilling out of the coffee shop, so it was later moved to the Reno Elks Lodge.

It's fun, festive, frilly, and a bit foofy. But there's also a serious side to this... one of the FROMgoers, Laura Clift lost her mom to lung cancer. She died just four months after being diagnosed. Clift says, "what I hate to hear is how hard treatments are on people."

So they turned FROM into a big charity event for the American Cancer Society.

Michelle Hale the District Executive Director of the American Cancer Society has attended FROM early on and says, "we're here for a purpose, here to save lives."

Sintay says,"cancer has touched my life too and a lot of customers here at Kona Gold. It's definitely a way we want to help people in the community."

A guy who missed out on a high school thrill is now so much more fulfilled.

Hale says, "cancer is very depressing and we can let people know we're still having fun." Plus, she says, "who wouldn't want to act like a kid again?"

Syntay adds, "maybe it's a way for parents to get together, make their kids stay home and they go out!"

They're selling tickets for $15 at Kona Gold off Mira Loma and McCarran Blvd. or you can go to www.renofrom.com

Channel 2's Neda Iranpour will emcee this year's event. People ages 21 and up are all invited on April 6th from 7-11pm.
