Illinois Funeral Held for Marine Killed in Hawthorne Explosion

A funeral was held for 26-year-old Corporal Aaron Ripperda Wednesday in his hometown of Highland, Illinois just east of Saint Louis.

Ripperda was a 2005 graduate of Highland High School and enlisted in the Marines three years later.

Ripperda was the sixth Marine to be laid to rest since the explosion.

On Monday, a funeral was held for North Carolina Marine Mason Vanderwork in his hometown of Hickory.

And this past Friday, funerals were held for two other Marines killed in the explosion.

In Maryland, the family of Lance Corporal Taylor Wild Laid their son to rest. And in Massachusetts, family and friends gathered to say good-bye to Lance Corporal Roger Muchnick Jr.

Services were also held last week for 21-year-old Joshua Taylor of Ohio and 19-year-old Joshua Martino of Pennsylvania.

On Saturday, Lance Corporal David Fenn will be laid to rest in Florida.

 

 

 

The seven Marines were members of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

The March 18th explosion happened when a mortar shell exploded in its firing tube during a training exercise.

Eight others were injured in the incident.

The explosion also caused an immediate suspension of the use of 60 mm mortars by the Marine Corps. Troops in Afghanistan are exempted.
