Senate Committee to Hear Lake Tahoe Compact Bill

Posted: Updated:

A bill to repeal Nevada's threat to withdraw from the bi-state Tahoe Compact is up for a hearing before the Senate Natural Resources Committee.

SB229 would repeal a law passed in 2011 that paved the way for Nevada to leave the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and instead regulate environmental protections and development on the lake's shores within its boundaries.

Nevada lawmakers blamed their counterparts in California for favoring tough environmental standards that they said were hindering development and the economy. Among other things, they cited a regional plan that hadn't been updated since the late 1980s.

That hurdle was cleared in December, when TRPA's governing board approved a plan giving more development control to local governments.

The Tahoe Compact was created in 1969 to protect the scenic Sierra lake. (AP)
