Bill Would Feed Kids on Days Without School Lunch

Posted: Updated:

A Nevada congresswoman wants to ensure low-income children get nutritious meals even on days they're not eating in their school cafeteria.

Las Vegas Democratic Rep. Dina Titus announced Thursday that she'd introduced the Weekend Without Hunger Act in Congress.

The measure would set up a 5-year pilot program to provide resources to institutions such as schools or food banks. Those organizations would then stage projects to give nutritious food to children during weekends and on school holidays.

Titus says the proposal could multiply the work of charities such as Three Square, which provides about 5,000 bags of food to needy Clark County children each weekend.

The congresswoman said the measure would fill the gap for students in the free- or reduced-price lunch programs, including about 170,000 students in Clark County.
