Gun Control Opponents Hold Rallies Nationwide

Supporters of gun control legislation held a National Day of Action nationwide Friday to encourage Congress to act - including here in northern Nevada.

Gun control supporters rallied in Carson City Thursday morning at the site of the deadly IHOP shooting in September of 2011.

One Vietnam veteran at the rally said he doesn't want military-grade weapons in the hands of civilians- and said opponents of gun control have an overly-broad interpretation of the second amendment.

"It doesn't talk about weapons of war that belch out bullets by the thousands. It couldn't have. We haven't amended the second amendment. But people ought to have brains enough to know the difference!" says Washoe Valley resident Hank Alderson.

But those who oppose tighter gun restrictions are also making their voices heard.

They showed up outside a town hall meeting last week protesting new gun control measures in Colorado.

The president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation says lawmakers should focus on access to firearms not guns themselves.

"The same firearms in the hands of a law abiding sportsman ... is a horror show in the hands of a violent criminal who shouldn't have them and is not legally entitled to possess them," says Steve Sanetti.

We've attempted to contact a local representative of the National Rifle Association but have yet to hear back from them.
