'Celebration of Smiles Day' to Benefit Operation Smile

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday, April 20, Pitts Orthodontics and local photographer Pete Rezac of Pete Rezac Photography will team up to promote "Celebration of Smiles Day," a national fundraising effort to benefit Operation Smile, which treats children around the world who suffer with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.  The two local companies join Professional Photographers of America (PPA) to provide the gift of an individual portrait session and a desk-size portrait in exchange for a $24 donation to PPA Charities.  This donation represents one tenth of $240, the amount needed to help fund a single surgery.  Photos will be taken at Pitts Orthodontics between 9 am and 6 pm on April 20.  The office is located at 4768 Caughlin Parkway, Suite 305 (near the Scolaris).

"Unfortunately, there are thousands of children around the world born with cleft lip and palate every year," said Dr. Mark Handelin.  "Many of these children will never see their first birthday, those that do typically don't receive any treatment in developing countries.  I have seen firsthand the effects of this birth defect here and abroad and know these programs make a tremendous difference.  This is why we have teamed up with Pete Rezac to help raise money to provide these children with the care and treatment they need."

Founded in 1982, Operation Smile is a worldwide children's medical charity dedicated to helping children and young adults born with facial deformities. In as little as 45 minutes, one cleft lip surgery can change a child's life forever. Every three minutes a child somewhere in the world is born with a facial deformity. One in ten will not survive to see their first birthday. Those who do survive often live in isolation and pain. Each year, more than 100,000 children are born with a facial deformity in Operation Smile's 26 partner countries. Tens of thousands remain un treated.

According to Lexington, Kentucky photographer Tim Walden, President of Professional Photographers of America (PPA), "Celebration of Smiles Day" is the perfect opportunity to have your portrait made or that of a loved one, because in doing so you are making it possible to truly change the lives of children who would otherwise face a lifetime of pain and rejection."

"Joining with Pitts Orthodontics, I believe that we can help make a difference in the lives of these children who would otherwise go without the medical attention they need," said Pete Rezac, photographer.  "It's a wonderful opportunity for us to join forces and provide a beautiful portrait while helping a child somewhere in the world."
