Soldiers who are recovering at Renown Regional Medical Center after Monday night's deadly explosion at the Hawthorne Army Depot are in the thoughts of our community, along with a woman with a heart of gold.

Diane Navis posted signs outside the Sparks Elks Lodge on Rock Boulevard Saturday, encouraging people to stop by with donations for gift baskets.

Several people were more than willing to help, and they donated money, gift cards, cookies, candy, fruit and T-shirts.

Diane was able to put together six beautiful baskets.

"I'm really happy that I got a chance to help them," she said. "I'm looking forward to going to Renown hospital and being able to deliver them to the young fellows."

The Marines who were hurt or killed during Monday's exercise were based out of North Carolina. Diane says that's the reason she wanted to help.

"If one of my sons was in an accident, and they were this far away in the military, I would want someone to do the same thing for them."

Diane says a lot of drivers were honking in support of the Marines as they drove by the Sparks Elks Lodge.
